After years of decay and inaction, a humane and effective solution may be imminent at the San Vicente Encampment.
At the BHA annual meeting this past March, our board asked LAPD Chief Moore for help in resolving the issues outside the VA along San Vicente. After several communications and visits to the site, BHA board members met with various senior representatives of LAPD and their Homeless Outreach division. Since the sidewalk at the VA is County territory, BHA reached out to LA County Sheriff's Department to include its Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST) in the workgroup.
Since September, BHA board members have encouraged and participated in multiple clean up efforts, despite harassment and criticism from individuals wanting the encampment to remain. These cleanups involved the expertise and participation of an expanded workgroup that includes the VA Dept. of Mental Services, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), and the Los Angeles Department of Public Works. The goal for all those involved has been to help those in the encampment get the services they need and successfully transition to a permanent housing solution.
Murders, robberies and other dangers prove this encampment is not safe for its residents or the neighborhood, and the efforts of the BHA and other community groups may finally glean a solution. The Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Sheriff's Department, has set a date of November 1 to move people to safer and cleaner temporary housing, and reestablish public access in the area. BHA will be working hand in hand with LAPD to ensure that new encampments don’t spring up through our neighborhood streets and that we continue to address all incidences of crime on an ongoing basis to ensure our community is a safe place for all to live.
We thank all those involved, from outreach and mental health groups, law enforcement, neighborhood councils and committed individuals who have taken time away from their families and blazed a path toward equitable solutions. We thank Capt Tom of West LAPD, who played an important role in our communications with crime and safety units and made introductions to our LASD partners.
We hope this is the beginning of something better.
BHA will be scheduling a Town Hall in the coming weeks with all our law enforcement and outreach partners, where your questions and concerns will be addressed.
