The photo above taken at the turn of the century is from the San Vicente median looking north on Bristol, formerly known as "Grand Avenue." All of the area west of the Old Soldier's Home (now the West LA VA) was known as a beautiful subdivision called Brentwood Park. Westgate Ave was named as such for being the western access route to the VA. When Los Angeles annexed Brentwood in 1916, many of the landscaped medians and roundabouts were straightened and renamed.
