City Hall Update on No Camping Ordinance

Our newly elected City Councilwoman Traci Park is working to fulfill one of her campaign promises to apply existing City law 41.18, the so-called “no camping” ordinance, to help keep certain sensitive uses, such as libraries, parks, and freeway underpasses, safe and clean.  To do so, the entire City Council must vote to designate such areas as a sensitive use where 41.18 may apply.

This is the first step towards the cleaning up of a homeless encampment and creating a protected zone near libraries, parks and other designated sensitive uses.  The first list of sites that Councilwoman Park has set forth for City Council approval involves impacted libraries and parks in Venice, and Venice residents have reached out asking for concerned residents in CD-11 to voice their support.

From past surveys and meetings, we know many of our members support the use and enforcement of 41.18 to protect sensitive land uses.  If you agree with Ms. Park and would like her efforts to succeed, please submit your comments by clicking on this link and stating you are in support of Ms. Park’s motion.  If you would like to read more on the topic, see this article.

Mandatory Recycling of Food Scraps

Effective immediately, residents serviced by LASAN (LA Sanitation) are required to place food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard waste, in their green bin. The City of Los Angeles will pick up the green bin weekly and the collection day will remain the same.

This new program, OrganicsLA, is a curbside organics recycling program from the City of Los Angeles, mandated by Senate Bill 1383, a statewide mandate aimed at keeping organic waste out of landfills and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. (please see their website for more information on what can go in the green bin and how.)

To help residents start recycling their food scraps, LASAN is offering a free kitchen pail to City of Los Angeles residents. These pails are available for pre-registered pickup at participating distribution sites, one pail per household, while supplies last. Pails are not required to participate in the new organic waste recycling program. Any container of choice (e.g., bowl, paper bag, etc.) can be used to collect food scraps and take them to the green bin.
