Mail Delivery and Mail Box Issues

At our annual meeting we asked Congressman Brad Sherman to look into why our members can go days without receiving their mail.  After contacting the Postmaster for our area, Congressman Sherman's representative reported the following:

USPS has been having severe staffing issues since the beginning of the pandemic. It has been very hard for the post office to maintain a full staff. Though they are hiring on a daily basis, staff often does not remain with the post office longer than a few days-especially as of late. Due to the low number of workers, customers are going to experience that 3-5 day window where they will not receive mail, except for packages.

While this is not a solution to the problem, it is an explanation.  If you have not received mail for more than two days,  you can also fill out a service request,  which goes straight to the supervisor's email and is replied to within 72 hours.

Due to theft and vandalism over the years, Barrington post office has been forced to lock or remove the outdoor mailboxes. If you wish to mail letters or packages at the post office, you must use the depository just inside the glass doors in the PO box area.

If you wish to learn more about mail delivery issues, a field representative from Congressman Sherman's office will be at our April meeting to answer any questions. Register for the Zoom meeting here.

Bureau of Forestry and Fire Protection Needs Your Input

A California law passed in 2020 requires the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection to develop the regulation for a new ember-resistant zone (Zone 0) within 0 to 5 feet of the home by January 1, 2023.  This ember-resistant zone is designed to keep fire or embers from igniting materials that can spread the fire to your home.  The Bureau of Forestry and Fire Protection is asking for our feedback to assess the cost of implementation of this zone.  Please complete the survey.  All members who live above Sunset Blvd. are in the LRA VHFHSZ.  You can learn more about hardening your home and defensible space at the CalFire website.

Who Is  Responsible for A Broken Curb?

A member recently wrote us after their Service Request to LA's Street Services to repair this curb was denied.  The reason? "Per Municipal Code, Chapter VI, Section 62.104 adjacent property owners are responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the public right of way from Curb face to property line."  A check of the municipal code section cited confirms this.  In the future, if you have a problem with potholes, trees, drains, or street lights, report them to MyLA311 so they will be forwarded to the proper agency.  You can also find links to parking enforcement and building Inspection there as well. If you are feeling really adventurous, you can check LA's Municipal Code  for answers to your questions about noise ordinances or fence heights to name a few.
