Protected Tree Illegally Removed at 401 Tigertail

Last year the developer of this property cleared trees prior to construction.  The only tree remaining was this Sycamore tree, which is a protected tree and cannot be removed.  This week, as construction began, construction workers chipped away at the dirt and roots around the tree.  Not surprisingly, the tree fell down.  BHA notified the Division of Urban Forestry immediately, who sent an inspector out prior to the tree coming down and has since notified Building and Safety of this violation.  The LA Municipal Code is very clear on what is a protected tree and the consequences for its removal can be a revocation of the building permit.  (see the Code here). Unfortunately, removal of protected trees is all too common with little enforcement because the City is not notified and the builder removes trees without permission (read about another example here).  This is an issue BHA is working to address and we welcome your comments or thoughts.
