Arrests Made In Burglaries

The West LA Police Department recently held two town hall meetings to address the rise in burglaries on the Westside (368 incidents as of December!).  Residents heard from the detectives working on the cases, who provided helpful tips on how to prevent break ins.  Yesterday, LAPD announced arrests made related to these burglaries with over $1 million in stolen goods recovered.  Read more about it here.

Each year brings new laws.  Here are some that will affect us in Los Angeles:

Speed Cameras

AB 645: Allows six cities - Glendale, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose - to install speed cameras that would automatically capture the license plate information of drivers who are traveling at least 11 miles per over hour over the road's speed limit.  The first violation up to 15. mph over the limit would result in a warning.  The cameras can only operate for five years and will only be allowed in school zones, safety corridors or areas where speeding is a common problem. They will not be allowed on freeways.

Housing

SB 4: Removes regulatory barriers to allow churches, religious organizations and non-profit colleges to build affordable housing on their land.  The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Weiner, would allow these institutions to develop surplus land regardless of local zoning restrictions.
