Proposition 36
In 2014 Proposition 47, co-authored by our current District Attorney Gascon, reduced the punishment for some theft and drug crimes by changing them from felonies to misdemeanors. Proposition 36 would counteract these reductions by:
-
increasing punishment for some theft and drug crimes, most notably by making theft of items worth $950 or less a felony (instead of a misdemeanor) if the person has two or more convictions for certain theft crimes;
- creating a new treatment-focused court process for some drug possession crimes;
-
requiring courts to warn people convicted of selling or providing illegal drugs to others that they can be charged with murder if they keep doing so and someone dies.
BHA encourages you to read this non-partisan analysis to understand the proposition which could directly affect criminal activity in our neighborhood.
LA County Measure A
In 2017, LA County voters approved a 1/4 cent sales tax to address homelessness, Measure H, which would expire in 2027. With billions raised and homelessness still a problem, Measure A would REPLACE the 1/4 cent sales tax with a 1/2 cent sales tax that WOULD NEVER EXPIRE. Whereas Measure H needed 2/3 of the votes to pass, Measure A only needs a simple majority.
Stay tuned for more information on Measure G, which would amend the county charter to create an elected County Executive as well as an Ethics Commission, establish a Legislative Analyst to review proposed policies, increase the Board of Supervisors from five to nine elected members, and require county departments to present annual budgets in public meetings.
With so many measures and names on the ballot, we encourage you to go online and find information to help you make an informed decision. This LAist guide lists all of the City, County and State items on the ballot.
