Palisades Fire Update
At 13% containment, the Palisades Fire is still an active fire event. The last two days saw our firefighters work day and night to stop the fire from sweeping through Mandeville Canyon and other parts of Brentwood. Updates show that a combination of aircraft and ground personnel have helped to secure the fire’s edges. Firefighters remain vigilant as their infrared mapping shows isolated heat sources. The fight continues as we enter into more days of Red Flag warnings and the return of winds on Tuesday.
Evacuation Instructions Still in Place
Today a portion of Brentwood saw evacuation warnings downgraded to warning. Please check the LAFD map, but homes from Bowling Green to the 405 are now in the yellow zone of Level 2 (be ready to evacuate, but it is not mandatory). Tigertail and streets west of Tigertail are still under mandatory evacuation orders. Power is still out in many parts of Brentwood and there is a do not drink water notice still in effect from LADWP.
No Access to Mandatory Evacuation Areas
After Friday's mandatory evacuation warning for a large portion of Brentwood north of Sunset, many were concerned about the security of their homes left unattended without power. BHA shared our members' concerns and reached out to the Mayor, LAPD and Councilwoman Park. Councilwoman Park immediately responded and worked to secure a police presence. Today, police are stationed at the intersections on Sunset to prevent access to the homes and roads in the mandatory evacuation zone north of Sunset. As our Senior Lead Officer Matt Kirk stated in his email update today, "these are unprecedented times and we must prioritize our precious resources to focus on the ongoing threat. We need to keep the area clear for our firefighters and our officers focused on supporting those efforts while also keeping an eye out for any potential looting, search and rescue efforts for missing persons, and protecting crime scenes in the event evidence of arson is discovered."
Grateful for Those on the Front Lines
January 7 is a day we will all remember not just for the devastation it wrought on a beloved community, but for the heroic acts of the first responders. Thank you to our LAFD and our LAPD who have worked non-stop on our behalf. And thank you to Councilwoman Park who has been at the scene with her staff everyday, responding to our concerns and communicating directly with BHA to make sure everyone stays safe.
