Army Corps Rejects Haul Route Plan
Thank you to everyone who has emailed Mayor Bass and shared your experiences with BHA. The burden placed on our community is evident in your stories--90 mins to drive a quarter mile on Sunset before giving up and returning back home, missing your child's afterschool lesson. Being unable to cross Sunset at Kenter and finally giving up after missing two light changes, parking your car and walking to the house. The City heard our pleas and proposed a traffic plan that would prevent trucks from traveling east on Sunset. HOWEVER, the Army Corps of Engineers has rejected using the plan, citing their ability to use all legal routes to remove the debris.
The Army Corps of Engineers reports to FEMA, the federal government. While they work with the Mayor and our Councilwoman in the Palisades recovery effort, they appear to be exempt from LA City rules that govern our streets--weight limit of trucks on Sunset, complying with the traffic management plan, and LADOT's restriction on haul trucks using local streets for cut through traffic. The only restriction placed on these trucks--tarps covering debris--are violated with no repercussions (see photo below).
Special Meeting Monday, April 7 on Zoom at 7:30pm
Last Sunday on 60 Minutes, Colonel Swenson of the Army Corps of Engineers stated each house requires four days to remove debris. With thousands to be cleared, the efforts will take a year and Sunset will continue to look like the photo above.
This is unacceptable.
We are asking all of you to attend a special BHA meeting on Monday, April 7 to discuss what we as a community can do to take action, through the government or through the courts, to implement a traffic management plan to protect our community. We need your participation, please register using the link below.
