Annual Brush Clearance Inspections

All members who live in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ) should have received their annual inspection notice from LAFD.  Inspections by the LAFD Brush Clearance Unit will begin May 1.

There is some confusion as to what is required, given the proposed Zone 0 guidelines being discussed as well as the Zone A information included in the inspection notice (which reflects the more stringent Zone 0 requirements not yet adopted).  It is our understanding that right now, the current requirements are those found on the LAFD brush clearance page where you can view the status of your lot, NOT the more stringent Zone A requirements outlined in the notice.  We are waiting to speak to the LAFD Brush Clearance Unit for confirmation and will report back as soon as we do.

As a reminder, to prevent smaller brushfires accidentally started by performing brush clearance, LAMC requires the following safety measures:

  • Use of metal cutting blades for grass or brush clearance shall be limited to those which are non-ferrous/non-sparking.
  • Brush clearance cannot be done on red flag days, when fire weather conditions are at their peak.
  • Individuals engaged in brush clearance operations shall not engage in any other activities during their actual clearance of grass or brush.
  • An approved fire extinguisher, or a pressurized garden hose with attached nozzle shall be within 10 feet of any grass or brush clearance operation, to quickly extinguish a small fire before it burns out of control.
  • A cell phone capable of dialing 9-1-1 shall be charged and readily accessible to the grass or brush clearance operation.

It is Important to know where your address lies on the new maps since your placement may have changed.  Use this link and scroll down to Explore Fire Hazard Severity Zones to search for your home.

Thank you to everyone who submitted comment letters to the Board of Forestry regarding the proposed Zone 0 requirements. If you haven't already or if you have friends or family who live in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones outside of BHA, please go to the home page of our website to submit a comment or to find more information.  Again, the Zone requirements shown above and discussed at the Board of Forestry are for those living in high fire zones.

How Much More Can Brentwood Take?

Last night Caltrans hosted a webinar to present the details of the 405 Repavement Project. This is what we know:

  • Construction will go from Victory through Wilshire Blvd on the 405 starting in late May/early June and end in Winter 2028 with final project completion in 2029.
  • Work will be done at night with lane closures from anywhere between 8:00pm-10:00pm until 5:00am-7:00am.  The timing depends on the work being performed.
  • Two to three lanes are supposed to remain open.
  • 22 planned 55-hour weekend partial freeway closures (Friday night to Monday morning)
  • Some nightly full closures.
  • No lane closures on holidays or special events.
  • There will be a moratorium on construction during the Olympics.

The project will start before PCH is fully reopened and fire debris removal has ended.  All closures and project updates will not be known until construction has started and will be under the control of the contractor.  Major Brentwood on/off ramps--Sunset, Moraga, Mulholland Drive, Getty Center--will be closed at times throughout the project.  Sepulveda will then become the detour route and Caltrans states LADOT traffic control officers will be stationed at each on ramp intersection.

We advise everyone to sign up for email updates before and during the project by emailing Lauren Walike, Caltrans Public Information Officer, at repave.405@dot.ca.gov.  Her cell is 213-200-8694.  In addition, Caltrans expects delays to be no more than 15 minutes with signage telling motorists about the closures at night.  If the delay is 30 minutes or more Caltrans states they will address it.  However, the only way to let them know is to go to https://csr.dot.ca.gov/, which only responds weekdays during business hours.

Based on last night's presentation, Caltrans could offer little information about the operation (timeline of construction, closures, plans in case of wildfire or evacuation) since it is under the control of the contractor (C.A. Rasmussen and Vanguard Construction).  BHA has reached out to our State and City representatives to discuss how to mitigate this impact on Brentwood.
