Harden Your Home Event A Success!
Thank you to everyone who came by BHA's home hardening event last Saturday at St. Martin of Tours to speak with vendors and to hear from our very own BHA member and expert Zhila Ross on what it means to harden your home. Councilwoman Traci Park opened the event with a few words and then Inspector Warren Sutton from the LAFD Brush Clearance Unit spoke and answered questions about brush clearance requirements. BHA's fire safe council, FireSafe Brentwood, will be making all of the information shared at the event available to members as it works to create FireWise Communities within our boundaries. Stay tuned!

Important Zone 0 Update: Your Voice Still Matters
Last week, the Board of Forestry released a new draft of the proposed Zone 0 regulations—and it confirms our fears: they're not listening.
Despite hundreds of public comments (including over 100 from BHA members and friends) and 580 signatures on the MySafe:LA letter, the Advisory Committee has advanced a draft that continues to ignore the critical concerns raised by scientists and residents.
What’s Still Wrong with the Draft? -
It imposes a one-size-fits-all statewide rule requiring removal of all vegetation within five feet of any structure—including ADUs, even if located on a neighbor’s property.
-
It disregards regional differences and scientific input on the role of vegetation in reducing heat, controlling erosion, and blocking embers.
- It legislates rigid, costly mandates that burden homeowners and cities.
-
It opens the door to insurance companies using aerial surveillance for enforcement and denial of coverage—often without homeowner input or context.
What Happened at the Wildfire Webinar?
At last week's webinar hosted by Assemblymember Irwin, Senator Allen, and Supervisor Horvath, over 120 questions were submitted. Assemblymember Irwin pressed for answers—but CAL FIRE deflected, saying the Board of Forestry writes the regulations, not CAL FIRE. Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant confirmed these regulations are insurance industry driven when he stated that the proposed regulations will align with insurance requirements. Even though our local fire officials emphasized that education, not blanket mandates, is the key to safer communities.
The Fight Isn’t Over
The Board of Forestry is reviewing the June draft with the Advisory Committee before finalizing it by the end of the year. That means now is the time to act. Whether or not you live in a high fire zone, your voice counts.

Pacific Palisades Update
All roads in and out of the Palisades are now open. However, DWP is still working in the area, and fire debris removal continues, impacting traffic lanes. In addition, AQMD reports: [air monitoring reports] suggest that air quality in the affected fire zones has largely returned to pre-fire conditions. However, ongoing cleanup activities may resuspend dust and ash in the air, which may result in localized impacts on air quality. If you need to be in the Palisades, please follow safety precautions.
