Fires, Tsunamis, Earthquakes...What's Your Evacuation Plan?
In 2019, the State legislature passed a bill requiring California cities and counties to analyze whether or not their roads could support a quick evacuation. In 2020, after the Getty Fire forced the evacuation of residents in the hillsides of Brentwood, then Councilmember Mike Bonin asked LAFD, L A Emergency Management Department, the LA Department of Transportation and other relevant agencies to report back on the "capacity, safety and viability of existing and potential evacuation routes in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones." Unfortunately, BHA, after numerous requests, never received this report. In fact, there is no evidence of a report back 30 days after the September 2020 motion. A review of the council file shows a certification of the updated Safety Element that never answers the request of Bonin's motion or the state statute--can our roads support an evacuation?
A recent LA Times article confirms that five years later, this question still has not been answered. Yesterday, Councilwoman Traci Park passed a motion asking for the status of the City's current compliance with the state law as well as a list and assessment of all evacuation routes in high risk areas in CD-11. Once again we will follow up on this report since it is a vital part of BHA's work to prepare our community for the next wildfire or catastrophe.

Trash Fees To Increase Starting in the Fall
Members should have received a notice from LA Sanitation about the increase in fees for trash pick up and related services. The current $36.32 monthly fee will increase to $55.95 this fall and then each year until July 2029 when it will reach $65.93. This is due to the recent budget hearings and need to raise revenue to cover the deficit. More information can be found here.
