Over 400 People Attend Zone 0 Meeting

The Zone 0 Advisory Committee’s meeting in Pasadena drew approximately 100 people in person and more than 300 online. The overwhelming message from residents, Councilwoman Park, and ecological and environmental experts was clear: we support wildfire safety through local control, proven home-hardening measures, and fair, workable rules that protect both people and the environment. The timeline for the rulemaking will be more meetings and revisions through October then delivery of final draft regulations to the full Board of Forestry in November with hearings and public comments in November for finalization in December.

We thank Councilwoman Park for her testimony yesterday and for the support of Supervisor Horvath and Assemblymember Irwin. We thank the Councilmembers who sent this letter in support of the report delivered to the City Council Public Safety Committee on Wednesday by LAFD and the Community Forest Advisory Committee.

Landscaping for Wildfire Resilience

While we do not advocate for the complete removal of hydrated and well-maintained vegetation in Zone 0, we support year-round maintenance of removing all dead and dying plants and weeds.  Debris removal of leaves and needles from your roof, gutter, deck, porch and stairways must be a year-round task.  These items are flammable and dangerous if a fire starts.

What we have heard over and over from fire fighting personnel is that some trees and bushes are highly flammable: Cedar, Cypress, Fir, Juniper, Pine, Eucalyptus, Acacia, Palm Trees and Pampas Grass.  Many of you have asked about vegetation that is better suited for our environment and more likely to withstand a fire.  We will be hosting a seminar in the coming months about creating a more fire resistant garden.  In the meantime, you can learn more  at Sustainable Defense Space.

Thank you Mayor Bass for standing with your fellow Angelenos and requesting a veto on SB 79 from Governor Newson in favor of our state certified Housing Element.  (Read her  letter to Governor Newsom.) It is now in the Governor's hands and on his desk.  We must keep the pressure on.
