Coyote Activity in Brentwood Important reminder of what to do if a coyote approaches you: - Wave your arms.
-
Shout in a low, loud tone.
- Throw objects at the coyote while maintaining eye contact.
- Make yourself look as big as possible.
- If you are wearing a jacket, take it off and swing it around over your head.
-
Do not turn your back and run from the coyote as that could trigger a chase.
Be sure to keep your dog on a leash when walking and if you see coyotes in your area, do not leave children and dogs unattended outside. More information on what to do is included in this brochure. The City of Los Angeles does not trap coyotes unless they are injured. It’s illegal to trap and relocate wildlife (California Code of Regulations, Title 14, § 465.5) and the Department will not kill or hunt coyotes. CA Fish & Wildlife has jurisdiction over wildlife.
If there is a particularly aggressive coyote in your area, CA Fish & Wildlife has the equipment to safely remove that animal. Please report a wildlife incident with CA Fish & Wildlife directly: https://apps.wildlife.ca.gov/wir |
Update on Crime and Flock Cameras At last week’s BHA monthly meeting, Captain Rich Gabaldon and Senior Lead Officer Matt Kirk provided an update on crime in Brentwood. - Burglaries are down, but they are still occurring.
-
LAPD’s Drone Pilot Program was able to capture footage of the vehicle used in a recent burglary at the top of Cliffwood.
-
A more disturbing incident occurred this week when a woman, walking in a neighborhood above Sunset at 11:00 AM, was assaulted. The assailants, wearing masks and driving a black Acura, threw her to the ground, kicked her, and stole her earrings. Detectives are actively investigating.
-
Many of these crimes are carried out by crews also active in Cheviot Hills, Encino, and other parts of the city.
- Flock license plate readers have been highly effective in Cheviot Hills, where they have led to the apprehension of suspects.
BHA Flock Program
This year BHA members overwhelmingly supported installing Flock License Plate Readers in Brentwood to assist with apprehending criminals. After working with LAPD and Flock, 17 locations were chosen (which we presented in June at our Home Hardening Event). Since these cameras will be installed on City property, we are in a holding pattern as we go through the bureaucratic process. Once we get approval we will be contacting all members to contribute to the two year contract for these license plate readers and to receive the above sign to place at your homes throughout our boundaries.
