Zone 0 Discussions and Meetings Resume
The California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection will be meeting in Los Angeles on April 23 as discussions on Zone 0 regulations resume after a pause in public meetings. The last meeting held in December in Sacramento featured two presentations by Southern California organizations, Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains and Theodore Payne Foundation, who made the argument for Options 4 and 2 of the proposed draft regulations last updated in October. While final regulations have not yet been issued, the process is moving forward again, making this an important moment for our community to stay engaged as these rules continue to be shaped and refined. You can register to attend the meeting virtually with this link. BHA's position remains the same: we oppose a one size fits all mandate that would eliminate all vegetation within five feet of our homes.
BHA supports the research of Dr. Jack Cohen, which shows that homes are not lost simply because of nearby vegetation, but because of vulnerabilities within the “home ignition zone” — especially the first few feet around a structure where embers can ignite combustible materials. This science-based approach offers a practical, evidence-driven path forward that improves safety while allowing communities like ours to maintain thoughtful, well-managed landscapes rather than relying on one-size-fits-all vegetation removal policies.
