We've written recently about the spike in burglaries and the many deterrents (see below). One of the most crucial is forming a small or medium sized neighbor network. Bonhill has had one for years and new ones are being formed with our encouragement on other Brentwood streets. Just having a communication between the neighbors to your left and right and across the street can be useful when going on vacation, to inform them about unusual activities or to ask about a car parked in front of your home. For the larger groups, one of you might be tech savvy enough to form a Google Group so one email gets to all concerned. (Make sure to set rules and boundaries so people aren't using it for unnecessary chat.) Keeping on the look out for each other may help chase the bad guys away.
