S.B.50 WILL DESTROY OUR NEIGHBORHOODS

S.B.50 is a bill being considered again, in the California legislature, and it could radically alter the residential landscape WITHOUT providing more affordable housing.

ONE HOME CAN BE TORN DOWN AND FOUR BUILT ON YOUR NEIGHBOR'S LOT
Consider this. You live within a quarter-mile of Sunset Blvd, near a high-frequency bus stop on Bundy or Kenter or Barrington. Your area is zoned for single-family housing. If S.B. 50 becomes law, your neighbor could convert his house to a fourplex. Or a developer could buy it and and do the same. Single family zoning would be a thing of the past. How far is a quarter-mile? A quarter-mile from Barrington and Sunset is Chaparal and Sunset. A quarter-mile from Bundy and Sunset is Bowling Green at Banff.

INCREASED DENSITY WITH NO ADDITIONAL PARKING
You live near San Vicente where developers could build four and five-story apartments. S.B. 50 blocks local governments from forcing developers to meet typical parking standards, particularly near rail. If the project is built within a quarter-mile of a rail station (Purple Line at VA) in a city with a population greater than 100,000, "it shall receive a waiver from any minimum automobile parking requirement," according to the current language in the bill.

WRITE THE SENATORS AND OPPOSE THIS BILL
It's time to take action. S.B. 50 has a deadline of January 31 to pass the full Senate or it will die. Even though the bill has been amended to give cities two years to come up with their own plans before the state mandate takes effect, our quality of life will change with more density, more traffic but not more affordable housing or infrastructure.

HERE'S WHO TO WRITE
Please write a simple email to the following Members of the California Senate Rules Committee and our Senator Ben Allen stating.

I am opposed to S.B.50. It would increase density in our high risk, high fire neighborhoods. It would not supply the type of housing needed. Our local governments can do better.

FILL OUT SURVEY HERE

Many of the things we do each year are not colorful and exciting, yet remain important to our members. The City has reached out for our input on the park to the south of the Post Office as there has been much controversy over its use as it relates to the VA Leasehold Agreements. An audit firm has been engaged by the City of Los Angeles to:

  • Obtain feedback and input on various topics from stakeholders such as Veterans and their families, Veterans Service Organizations, US Department of Veterans Affairs, former Plaintiffs in theValentini v. McDonald litigation, the local community and members of the California congressional delegation.

We will keep you posted as always about any new developments in future updates!
