Mayor Garcetti has issued the following directive:
Starting Friday, employees and customers at essential businesses (such as grocery stores) will be required to wear face coverings to take care of those who are taking care of us.
Homeless Encampments
These are excerpts are from our County Supervisor's office in response to our concerns and questions about the growing homeless encampments along the VA fence.
- Regarding the encampments along San Vicente, per CDC guidelines, we have halted the clean-ups that had been scheduled monthly.
- Outreach teams continue to offer resources (housing, food, etc) and check for COVID-19 symptoms. Previously our office had advocated for clean ups twice a month to start on March 17, since halted.
- We are currently in the process of bringing a significant amount of COVID-19 beds online (900 are currently online, with 1100 additional beds in the pipeline). This is in addition to leasing motels in partnership with the state for people experiencing homelessness Our partners at the city are working to bring more than 6,000 as well, including Westwood Rec Center down the street. We hope that many experiencing homelessness will be able to find shelter there instead of at San Vicente. However, as it applies with any other person, we have to follow the law and can offer these services voluntarily unless they are a danger to themselves or others.
- Unfortunately, the Sheriff does not have the bandwidth to enforce the numbers of people that congregate, not only at San Vicente, but also the very large groups of people that were at trails, beaches, and other facilities in past weekends. They are prioritizing their role as first responders before small group enforcement. Outreach staff is asking people experiencing homelessness to practice social distancing, and provide necessary informational and physical resources as available
