Subject: VETO AB 725
Dear Governor Newsom
I urge you to VETO AB 725.
This bill requires local jurisdictions to target single-family neighborhoods for multi-unit development, even if the jurisdiction has other options for meeting its state-mandated housing goals. It is similar to the now-defeated SB 1120 — both are aimed destroying single-family neighborhoods in the state of California. The effects of this bill will impact California families at every income level.
It abandons prior common-sense state policies of recent years, which encouraged high-density development in core business areas and along transit corridors, to instead export density into single-family neighborhoods.
This bill will benefit developers and speculators, does nothing to ensure affordability of housing, and overrules local jurisdictions who are best able to determine how to meet state RHNA mandates in their local areas.
AB 725 will have profound consequences for millions of Californians — but has been sneakily rushed through the legislature while the public and media have been distracted by the COVID-19 pandemic, social unrest and severe economic disruption.
Please VETO AB 725.
Thank you,
