Enjoy your sunny holiday weekend and remember, if you're leaving town, have someone remove packages and mail and be on the lookout!

Here To Stay?

The growing shanty town along Federal shows no signs of dissipating. Advocacy groups both locally and nationally have empowered the individuals here by offering them support and legal aid. Most of the individuals living in the tents have been offered better and legitimate alternatives, but they have refused. Some surmise there is an element of protest from both the inhabitants and the groups supporting their effort to remain where they are. Our local and county officials are at an impasse for any expeditious solution, while the Community Council continues to advocate for Brentwood.

Beauty In The Eye

Each month, we get a few neighbor concerns or complaints. The gardener is using the blower, what can I do about tree branches over my fence, can my neighbor park his car in front of my house and of course, construction. The answer to all of the former is usually solved by a pleasant conversation with your neighbor, who in most cases, didn't know there was an issue. In the latter however, we inform our members the City has no strict limit on construction length, although they may not work on Sundays or before 7:00am on weekdays. House size is subject to the Baseline Mansionization Ordinances which has had the unintended consequence of longer construction periods due to the preponderance of basements, which usually adds a minimum of six months to construction on moderate size homes. While we have to grin and bear it, remember that new home next to yours has historically increased your home value.

Shred It

With stimulus checks and debit cards in the mail, both mail boxes and trash have become a target for scammers looking for usable information. Please shred documents with any personal information before putting them in your recycle bin.

Those little red fire trucks dotting the City are related to a private company giving various Covid tests at the Luxe Hotel.

Bring It Home

The story goes like this. You're walking your dog on trash day and now you're carrying around your little green bag with a wonderful present inside. You pass a green bin along the street that has just been emptied. Now one of your neighbors has a smelly trash bin beside his house for a week. Not cool! Please use your own trash bin for all your waste, and that of your pets.

Myles on the lookout for perps and poops.

On another note, trash cans should not be out on the street past 8:00pm on the pickup day, nor before 5:00pm the day before. Trash cans out too long are unsightly, displace street parking and sometimes indicate to burglars you are away.

In Los Angeles County, the law says that “no person shall place any solid waste, or any container containing solid waste, at any place of collection before 5:00 p.m. of the day preceding the scheduled collection of said solid waste, or leave any such container at the place of collection after 8:00 p.m. on the day of actual collection, or more than two hours after actual collection, whichever is later.”

What can you do? Illegally placed trash containers can be reported to the Department of Public Health by calling (888) 700-9995 or by filling out a form on its website.
