Single-Family Neighborhood Zoning Under Attack

Senate Bill 9 has moved to the State Assembly and is quickly moving toward a vote in the Local Government Committee on Wednesday, June 9 at 1:30 p.m. This bill would eliminate single family zoning across the state, a threat to 7 million homeowners, while not one single unit of affordable housing will be required. We urge you to write a short opposition letter today, addressed to Assembly Local Government Chair, Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, and sent as an email via the committee staffer: hank.brady@asm.ca.gov. If you need some language for your letter, please see the BHA letter HERE.  There will be a call-in number to testify by phone on Wednesday. We will send an ALERT once the committee releases a public phone number for you to call in. Things are moving fast!

Facts about the VA Encampment
The homeless crisis across the City and especially the encampment outside of the VA continues to be of concern to our members.  Many agencies and members of the community have been working to remedy the problem, but there are many issues that complicate these efforts.  You can read about these issues here.

Homeless Housing at the Beach
Two months ago Councilman Bonin introduced a motion to identify and evaluate funding for temporary housing for the homeless in CD-11 that includes the parking lot of Will Rogers Beach.  May 26th the City Council voted 14-1 to proceed and evaluate the feasibility of the locations identified in Bonin's motion.  There is overwhelming opposition to Bonin's motion in his district, with Venice, Brentwood, Westchester, and Pacific Palisades Community Councils strongly opposed and considering legal action.

Brentwood residents are skeptical of Bonin's new plan based on their experience with the encampment at the VA and its dramatic increase in size, violent incidents (including murder), and fires despite their approval of billions of dollars in funds for the City and County to address homelessness through Measures H and HHH. (Read about City Controller Ron Galperin's audit here). Also, we question whether, merely because many homeless have chosen to camp on sidewalks, parks, and other public spaces in communities several miles from the beach, it is necessary to find alternative housing that is in those same communities rather than in areas with immediately available space.

We will continue to monitor the motion as it progresses through the process.  To learn more about the issues raised in our community about using a beach parking lot as homeless housing, please visit the Pacific Palisades Community Council (PPCC)  website that lists all letters written by PPCC as well as a letter written by Bonin after his April 8 visit to a special PPCC meeting.

It's The Little Things

Last month a member wrote to BHA asking why the barriers outside of Baja Norte were still in place when the restaurant had closed its doors? Originally installed as part of the LA Alfresco outdoor dining program (a program which the City Council recently voted to make permanent), the barriers were taking up precious parking spaces.  BHA sprang into action and contacted Councilman Bonin's office who, working with LADOT, had the barriers removed within weeks. We're here to help! See something? Say something! Write your BHA at info@brentwoodhomeowners.org.

San Vicente Coral Trees

A message from the Coral Tree Endowment Fund:

2020 was a year unlike anything most of us have seen in our lifetime. That pertains to our beautiful Coral Trees which have had their fair share of trauma. As a community, we have set our goals to care for our Coral Trees which started with a $1M campaign honoring Betty White back in 2011.

Ten years later, 2021 celebrates our rebirth of community, businesses, and also our  coral trees. Our trees are elderly, some are fine, some destroyed by gophers eating at their trunks and roots, others are middle aged and have been stricken by disease, BUT all are beloved. Sounds like humans, doesn't it? Donors of over $2,500 will have the opportunity to have their names engraved on a bronze plaque to be placed on the San Vicente median.

With your generosity, this year we will reach our goal to fund the trees in perpetuity.

With Gratitude,
Mary Ann Lewis, Jim Thomas, Nancy Freedman
Founders, Coral Tree Endowment Fund
