MOUNT SAINT MARY'S PROPOSED WELLNESS PAVILION IS MORE THAN A 35,000 SF "GYM" FOR ITS STUDENTS.  THE PROJECT INCLUDES OUTSIDE EVENTS THAT WILL BRING MORE TRAFFIC TO THE NARROW AND FIRE THREATENED STREETS

OF BRENTWOOD HILLS

IMPORTANT HEARING ABOUT MSMU PROJECT

If you are concerned about additional events Mount Saint Mary's is proposing without an enrollment cap, including a summer camp for hundreds of campers and staff who are not MSMU students...

Now is the time to speak up

Wednesday, July 14, at 9:30am

The City Planner in charge of this project will be hearing testimony from the school and the public on Wednesday, July 14 at 9:30am.  We know Mount Saint Mary's will have dozens of their students and faculty and alumni call in to support the project, regardless of the impacts on you.  We need to do the same in opposition. We need to you to call and write so our concerns get heard.

You can either attend through the Zoom link or call in with your phone. The notice with instructions can be found here.  If you cannot attend the hearing, PLEASE send an email to Kathleen King stating you oppose the project using the form letter below (feel free to personalize it).  The City MUST hear from you to consider your concerns. Take the time to attend or use our simple form to write in.

I OPPOSE THE MSMU WELLNESS PAVILION PROJECT BECAUSE:

- It is way too large and far exceeds by 100% what would be an excellent full-sized gym and fitness area; other schools are not relevant if they are not located in a high fire zone 2.6 miles up narrow hillside residential streets that feed onto the worst traffic in the Westside on Sunset Blvd.

- I am offended by the misleading postcards and letters I have received that describe the project as only a "new gym" instead of the 35,500 square foot, two story building that is asking for special exceptions for height, retaining walls, and grading beyond what is allowed by law and will take almost two years to build.

- It asks for many social activities and events that should not be permitted because they are for outside guests and not associated with the purpose of educating MSMU students.

- The traffic on our residential streets and on Sunset has gone beyond the tipping point and must be reduced, not increased, for EVERYONE'S safety!

- Although no increase in enrollment is requested, neither is there any limit on enrollment -- I heard Mike Bonin state at the BHA Annual Meeting in March, 2021, there would be no more than the current 1,500 students.

- It is misleading and not realistic to assert that the proposed large, fancy Wellness Center is not designed and intended to attract more students, and is only for existing students.

- The risks of fire and evacuation during two years of construction has not been dealt with in a realistic way.

- The school must provide resources for a safe and efficient emergency evacuation -- a plan that involves only sheltering in place does not deal with the situation of fire suppression capabilities being overwhelmed, nor with an earthquake when over 2,000 persons could be on campus.

- PM peak traffic hours are, at a minimum, 3:00 - 7:00PM and any traffic studies or trip restrictions that use different hours is not based on the facts we all live with every day.

- Conducting a summer camp for non-affiliated MSMU campers is not consistent with the purpose of the project and places the burden of increased use and vehicle trips in the summer on the neighbors.

- A fire response plan to shelter in place requires the attention of LAFD firefighters and equipment that increases the risk to our lives and property -- the school should not be asking for any increase in activities or events that would divert LAFD resources from the neighborhood or increase the difficulty of emergency evacuation.
