Only a Few Days Left to Save the Neighborhood

We're doing what we can, but we need seven minutes from you to save the integrity of our zoning laws and our homes.

The end of the CA legislative session starts tomorrow, Monday, August 16, with 26 days left. This is our last chance to kill SB 9 and SB 10, the Sacramento bills designed to eliminate single-family zoning throughout California. If the bills pass, Governor Gavin Newsom has 30 days to sign or veto the bills.

Here’s the timeline:

  • August 16th – Legislature reconvenes. Bills could be voted on.
  • August 19th - Assembly Appropriations Committee takes up Senate Bill 9.
  • September 10th – Last day to vote on the bills in the respective houses. Expect to be up late for this one. You can watch it online. Passed bills go to the Governor for signing.
  • September 14th – Recall election.
  • October 10th – Last day the Governor can either sign or veto the bills.

We want to encourage you to take action and make your voice heard with our legislators and Governor Newson.

First, there's a new poll conducted by regarded national pollster David Binder that shows Californians overwhelmingly do not support Senate Bills 9 and 10. You can download the poll here.

We strongly encourage you to contact your legislative representatives Assemblymember Richard Bloom and State Senator Ben Allen and forward this poll to them. You can find your legislator's email here.

Ask Newsom to VETO SB 9 & SB 10

According to the poll, 46% percent of voters would view Gov. Gavin Newsom less favorably if he supported SB 9 and SB 10. Send the governor a tweet or email, telling him that you oppose SB 9 and SB 10. Please also contact the Governor here.

Here is what you can use in addressing him. Please adapt as suits your voice:

Dear Governor Newsom,

A new statewide poll by David Binder shows SB9 with 71% opposition and SB10 with 75% opposition. The vast majority of Californians clearly do not believe that this is the right approach to deal with our housing problem. Renters don’t agree with this approach any more than homeowners. Quite simply, these bills are out of touch with California voters.

The reason is because Caifornians know we need better tools than SB 9 and 10. They don’t create affordable housing. The bills favor greedy developers and institutional investors by lowering zoning barriers to create more market rate and luxury housing.

That does not help us with families leaving the state because they can't find an affordable place to live. It doesn't help us solve homelessness.

Frankly, the rampant financialization of housing is a huge problem. VRBO, STR, and institutional investors, foreign and domestic, are removing housing supply, driving up pricing, and exacerbating homelessness.

We want to be part of the solution, but we need better tools like SB15, and the leadership you demonstrated by allocating funds to affordable housing. These ARE the way forward.

We’re watching this closely and our vote will be influenced by your position on how to fix the housing problem.

Tweet or email the Governor today, tomorrow and next week! Defeat SB 9 and SB 10.
