Burglary Spike

We have heard from many members this week concerned by the recent burglary on Homewood Rd, where two armed men forcibly entered an occupied home. One of them detained the homeowner while his partner searched for valuables. The perpetrators were not apprehended and there is no additional information at this time.

We are scheduling a meeting with LAPD command and the Council office to discuss the recent spike in brazen burglaries, many of which seem to have similar characteristics (see list below).

LAPD Command was on hand at our annual meeting in March, and with the support of Councilmember Bonin, the BHA expressed the urgent need for a dedicated LAPD patrol car in our area as both a deterrent to would be criminals and to reduce the call response time. To date, the City has not provided LAPD with the resources it needs to have a basic patrol car dedicated to the Brentwood area.

In addition, last year, we promoted to our members the idea of a single security company, but we did not receive a favorable response. Research and logic indicate a single patrol company could provide more dedicated patrol cars. Based on recent information, the BHA believes it is important for the security company to have well trained officers, preferably with a law enforcement background. One dedicated 24-hour per day patrol car may cost about $40,000 per month. That would be 200 homes at $200 per month or 400 homes at $100 per month. Both of those scenarios are much more than most people are currently paying, hence the hesitation from our members. We believe at least four dedicated security patrol cars would be needed for our 3,300 home area.

This month, we will be evaluating the performance and effectiveness of a strategically placed license plate reader in our area, for potential use on a broader scale.

We will continue to advocate on your behalf and communicate any new information as we get it. All of these issues and preventative measures will be on the BHA Board meeting agenda on August 14. Please consider attending.

Please note that 9 of the 13 recent Burglaries and the 1 Home Invasion Robbery (defined essentially as a burglary where force or fear is used on the victim) occurred between noon and midnight.  The three other burglaries occurred between midnight and noon.

Most of these residences were accessed by smashing rear windows.  One was by kicking in the door and one was by a window pane removal. The overall majority of them were entered by a rear or out of view access point.

Detectives don’t have further to share with the community at this point.  They are working diligently on all leads and follow-ups.  If you have any information to share, or if you’ve witnessed anything suspicious or unusual to your neighborhood, please send it to 30469@lapd.online.
